Starting with no car at all
When I wanted to start delivering, the obstacle wasn't the apps — it was that I had no vehicle and no credit history for a car loan. A weekly rental let me start working in days instead of months, without signing up for years of payments on a car I might not want later.
I treat the rental like a cost of doing business, the same way a contractor rents a tool. If I take a week off, I return the car and the cost stops.

How I keep the week profitable
I work the peaks — lunch and dinner — instead of sitting online all day, and I stay in a tight radius so I'm not burning fuel between orders. A fuel-efficient car makes a bigger difference in delivery than in rideshare, because you're stopping and starting constantly.
The other lever is time. If I stretch a rental past 28 days, the New Jersey sales tax on the rental drops out of my costs, which is worth planning around if you know you're driving steadily.

Rentals require a 7-day minimum, and insurance must cover the full rental period. This is my week, not a promise — delivery pay swings with weather, tips and how many apps you run, and NJ sales tax applies to rentals under 28 days.
What I'd tell a new driver
